Set up gift cards
Most stores are selling gift cards within half an hour. Spendable walks you through each step in the app, and nothing in your checkout changes.
Before you start
- Spendable works on every Shopify plan: Basic, Shopify, Advanced and Plus. You don't need Shopify Plus.
- You need an online store theme that supports app blocks. Every Online Store 2.0 theme does, including Dawn and the other free Shopify themes.
- Gift cards must be turned on in your store. Shopify does this automatically on every current plan.
1. Install the app
Install Spendable from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions. You start on the Free plan, which includes 10 gift cards a month. Paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.
The app opens on the Home page. Its setup guide shows how far along you are and what's left to do.
2. Create your gift card product
Open the setup guide from the home page. Set up your gift card has four short steps, with a live preview of the product page and the email as you go:
- What you're making. Name the product. Tick Also offer a physical card that you post with the order if you want to sell printed cards too.
- How much can people spend? Start with a suggested set of amounts or type your own, for example $25, $50 and $100.
- How does the gift card get to them? Email delivery is always on. Buyers can send the card now or on a date they pick, or send it to themselves to print or hand over.
- Check and create. Spendable creates the gift card product and puts it on your Online Store. Cancelled or refunded orders switch a card off automatically if it hasn't been spent.
Click Add a photo or description to finish the product in Shopify's own product editor, just as you would for any other product.
3. Add the gift card block to your theme
The Spendable gift card block turns a plain product page into a gift. With it, shoppers pick an amount and a design, type the recipient's name, email and a message, and choose to send it now or on a date.
- Click Add to my store. Your theme editor opens in a new tab on the gift card page, with the Spendable block already added.
- Drag the block where you like, or leave it.
- Click Save in the top right.
If the block isn't there, click Add block, choose Apps, then Spendable gift card.
4. Choose your designs
Under Designs, pick which built-in designs buyers can choose from and which one is selected by default. You can also upload your own artwork. Hidden designs disappear from the gift card block straight away.
5. Brand your emails and claim page
Under Settings, add your logo and brand colour. They're used in the gift card email and on the claim page the recipient opens. Under Emails, edit the gift card email with a live preview and send yourself a test.
6. Make a test purchase
Buy a gift card in your store with a test order or a real one that you refund afterwards. Check that:
- The email arrives, and the card appears under Gift cards with its delivery status.
- The claim link opens and shows the balance and the code.
- The code works at your checkout.
