Store credit
Store credit is money a customer can only spend in your store. It's native to Shopify, so it shows in the customer's account and applies at checkout with nothing extra to install. Customers treat it as money they already have, so it brings them back better than a percentage off.
Store credit is on every plan, including Free, and doesn't count towards the Free plan's 10 cards a month.
Issue credit to a customer
- Open Store credit and click Issue store credit.
- Under Customer, find the customer by name or email.
- Enter the Credit amount and pick the currency.
- Under Expiry, choose whether and when it expires. Credit that expires gets used sooner.
- Add a Reason. Only your staff see it.
The credit is added to the customer's Shopify account straight away. The Store credit page lists every grant with its reason, source and expiry, and totals for the month.
How customers spend it
Customers see their balance in their account on your store and apply it at checkout. To use credit at checkout, a customer has to be signed in to their account on your store. A customer who checks out as a guest can't apply credit, so for guests Spendable uses a gift card instead (see below).
Ideas that work
- Birthday treat. A small credit that expires in 30 days.
- Win-back. Credit for customers who haven't ordered in 90 days.
- Sorry for the wait. Credit for a late or damaged order, which keeps the money in your store instead of refunding it.
- Next-order reward. "Spend $100, get $20 for next time."
Refunds as store credit
On Growth and Pro, you can refund an order as store credit instead of money, and add an optional bonus to make credit the more attractive choice, for example 10% extra. The money stays in your store, and the reports show it under Refunds kept.
Refunds made as store credit by a returns app such as Loop are counted the same way. See Integrations for everything Spendable connects to.
Automate it with Klaviyo
On Growth and Pro, connect Klaviyo under Settings with a private API key. Your Klaviyo flows can then ask Spendable to give credit, for example on a birthday or after 90 days without an order. Spendable sends events back to Klaviyo, such as credit issued and credit about to expire, so you can send reminders like "your $20 expires Friday".
If the customer has an account, they get store credit. If they're a guest, Spendable creates a single-use reward gift card instead, so nobody misses out.
Automate it with Shopify Flow
On Growth and Pro, Spendable adds these to Shopify Flow:
- Issue store credit and Send gift card actions, for any workflow you build.
- Gift card claimed and Store credit expiring triggers, to start a workflow when they happen.
Safety limits
Automated grants are capped per grant, so a mistake in a flow can't hand out a fortune. Manual grants have a higher cap. If you need a larger amount, email us at support@spendablecards.com.
