Physical and printed cards
Spendable handles physical gift cards three ways: cards you post with an online order, batches of printed cards or codes, and printed cards you sell at the till. Every printed card carries a QR code and a short claim code, and works at your online checkout like any other gift card.
Post a card with an online order
In gift card setup, tick Also offer a physical card that you post with the order. Shoppers then see a second choice in the gift card block: Digital or Physical card.
Physical orders appear under Physical cards to ship, with the card's code to write or print on a card before you pack it. Mark each one as shipped when it goes out. No email goes to the recipient, because the card is in the parcel.
Make a batch of printed cards or codes
Open Batches and fill in Make a batch:
- What are the cards for? Choose Printed cards (plastic or paper cards with a QR code) or Codes to hand out (for events, partners or giveaways).
- Set the Amount on each card and How many cards, up to 1,000 at a time.
- Optionally add an expiry date and a name, such as "Christmas market 2026".
Spendable makes the batch in the background. When it's ready, download a print-ready sheet of card-sized tiles with QR codes, or a CSV for a card printing company. The CSV contains live card codes, so keep it private. Every download is logged.
Batches are on the Growth and Pro plans.
Sell printed cards at the till with Shopify POS
When you make a batch of printed cards, choose When do the cards start working?:
- When sold at the till (recommended). Cards are worthless until staff scan them in Shopify POS, so lost or stolen stock can't be spent.
- Straight away. Each card is live as soon as it's made, at the batch amount.
To sell a card, open the Spendable tile in Shopify POS, scan the QR code on the back of the card or type the code printed under it, and enter the amount. The card is added to the cart and activates with that amount when the order is paid.
If someone scans an unsold card, the claim page says it hasn't been activated yet and shows no amount or code. POS refuses a card that has already been sold or isn't from your store's printed stock.
Selling at the till is on the Pro plan.
